It will probably surprise no one that Apple still stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of market share in 2011. However, Apple will certainly feel Samsung breathing down its neck. The South Korean powerhouse is, after all, very progressive in this strongly represented market.
Market leader in the mobile industry
According to the Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, the five largest smartphone suppliers in the 4de around 157,8 million products were sold in the quarter of 2011. Of this very large number, 37 million were sold by Apple, giving them a market share of 23,5 percent.
Despite Apple's high market share, Samsung is also doing quite well. Samsung sold 36 million products in the 4de quarter of 2011 and therefore accounts for 22,8 percent of the market. Apple maintained its coveted lead by releasing the iPhone 4S.
Market leader in the smartphone industry
Samsung is indeed the top smartphone seller in 2011 when viewed over the entire year. In 2011, Samsung sold 94 million smartphones, while Apple sold 93,2 million. This number resulted in a 19,1 percent market share for Samsung in 2011, with Apple accounting for 19 percent. Samsung was also the fastest riser year-to-year with a 275 percent increase, while Apple rose 128,4 percent compared to the previous year. But besides winners, there are of course also losers. Blackberry and Nokia were among the losing side, even though Nokia launched its Lumia 800. HTC also cannot be happy with its slightly increased market share and, unfortunately, cannot maintain the rapid growth of recent years.

Android and Apple are therefore at the top with a combined market share of 75 percent.
