Google. By now, this phenomenon can be ranked among the most powerful productions in the world. Google is everywhere and for everyone. It is therefore only logical that enormous amounts of money are involved and that creators Larry Page and Sergey Brin are unlikely to run short of cash anytime soon.
AdWords as the main source of revenue
But what exactly does Google earn its money from? The most important source is AdWords. Billions of euros are earned through this every year. AdWords enables companies to advertise on Google websites in exchange for money. Of course, there are differences for every industry. A baker, for example, pays less than a lawyer. How is this possible? Words have different values. This is because certain words are searched for more often in Google's search engine than others. Consequently, when a word is searched for frequently, Google charges more money to advertise it than for a word that far fewer people are interested in.
The most expensive words to advertise on
WordStream recently investigated the most expensive words to advertise with—that is, the words searched for by the most people worldwide. And probably not entirely unexpectedly... the most expensive words have to do with money. In first place is 'insurance,' followed by 'loans' and 'mortgage.' Consequently, no one is going to advertise with these words just like that; a single click—meaning someone searches for the word 'insurance' and then clicks on an advertisement—costs the advertiser no less than €38,95! We probably have to assume, therefore, that insurance, loan, and mortgage providers earn enough from this to be able to 'spend' that much money on advertising costs...
