The US government has launched a battle against WikiLeaks. After WikiLeaks published 250.000 secret messages regarding contacts between American embassies and government officials in Washington, the US government will do whatever it takes to silence WikiLeaks. But WikiLeaks and many agencies are simply fighting back. They believe that what WikiLeaks is doing is justified. Everyone has the right to know what the government is up to.
The American web host Every DNS previously stopped hosting WikiLeaks because it was constantly being attacked by hackers – presumably from the government. WikiLeaks is now looking for new hosting because WikiLeaks.org has become inaccessible.
De Pers wrote the following: 'This will not only be a cyberwar between states or governments. This will be a war of hackers against hackers, everywhere on the internet, and without rules. Government hackers will attack WikiLeaks copies and search servers and PCs and infect them with viruses.'
But it is not only the government launching the attack; various organizations such as Anonymous, which support WikiLeaks, are also suspected of taking down websites of institutions like Mastercard and PayPal. This follows both institutions stopping donations to WikiLeaks because they did not want to be part of illegal entities. A member of the organization Anonymous tweeted the following: "Websites that yield to pressure from governments have become our target." This Twitter account turned out to have been shut down yesterday. Several accounts belonging to such organizations have already been removed by Facebook and Twitter for violating their terms and conditions. According to The Guardian, Twitter is next. This is partly because Twitter allegedly manually prevented "WikiLeaks" from becoming a trending topic on Twitter.
Many people believe that the government will do everything in its power to stop WikiLeaks.
They will never succeed in shutting down WikiLeaks completely because there are already countless mirror sites. The information that has already been leaked will therefore never be able to be removed from the internet. However, many people fear strict measures and security on the internet, which will cause the government to make the available information on the internet much more inaccessible.
