This is how you write web copy!

As an entrepreneur, you cannot do without a website; it is your online business card. The place where potential customers can find you. But what is a website without good copy? The trick is to describe what your company has to offer in as few sentences as possible. When people visit your website, they will never read everything from A to Z. They scan it in a few seconds to see if what is on the site is interesting or not. If not? They click away. Think from the customer's perspective

Many companies think from their own perspective, rather than from the customer's. Customers are becoming increasingly critical due to the wide range of brands, sizes, etc., available to them. It doesn't work to think: "Once we've told our story, the customers will come automatically." When writing the copy, ask yourself the following questions, thinking from the perspective of your potential customer: "What's in it for me?" or "Will I benefit from this?"

Scannable writing

It is important to keep a number of basic rules in mind when writing your text. This makes scanning the text much easier for the visitor. The elements I am referring to are:

  • (Sub)headings;
  • Blank lines in a text;
  • Short paragraphs (+/- 50 words);
  • Numbering to clarify any potential enumeration;
  • Images (provided they add value to the text);
  • Signal words.

 

Spelling mistakes are a no-go!

Nothing is more annoying for a visitor who has a good command of the Dutch language than discovering spelling or grammatical errors in a text. Mistakes look unprofessional. Writing style

Be consistent with the use of specific words and your writing style. Avoid using, for example, "u" (formal) in one sentence and "jij" (informal) in another. Also, ensure that you do not tire the reader with your story; the visitor will then not take the trouble to read the entire text. So write actively! Cover one topic per paragraph. When information needs to be explained in more detail, it is wise to refer to a specific page with a link. A good paragraph contains at least one keyword and stands out in the text.

 

Google-friendly texts

Web copy only truly comes into its own when it is frequently visited. How do you ensure this? The texts must have a good technical structure. It is important that the website contains high-quality content. If the website contains good content, you will attract many visitors. The number of visitors can lead to a higher position in Google. As a result, webmasters will also be inclined to link to your website. Consider which keywords your potential customers will type into Google. Use these words regularly on the website.
