Attention all webshop owners! In 2021, the government introduced new VAT rules that apply, among others, to companies active in e-commerce. And since chances are high that you will one day have a webshop (or websiteIf you had something developed at Best4u, you too can count yourself among this group. In this blog, we look at 5 things that are useful to know so that you won't face unnecessary surprises later on.
Changed start date
The government initially planned to implement the new VAT rules on January 1, 2021, but this has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, the new rules will not apply from the beginning of the year, but from July 1, 2021.
Easier process with the One-Stop System
Currently, you are required to pay VAT in each individual country to which you send your products, but this changes from the start date of the new scheme. The so-called One-Waiting Room system enables you to handle everything universally. To do this, however, you must register for the Union Scheme.
Different threshold amount
As of July 1, 2021, a different threshold amount will apply. This means that you only need to charge VAT in the country where you supply goods if your annual turnover exceeds €10.000. If the amount is below this, you simply pay your tax in the Netherlands. Please note that this amount varies by country, so you should consider whether it is advantageous to supply to a specific country.
Input VAT activated
Did you previously import products from the EU with a value of less than 22 euros? Then you did not have to pay tax on them. This will also change as of July 1, 2021. From that moment on, you will simply have to pay this import VAT. This is a particularly sensitive issue for dropshippers.
