From research of SME Service Desk en SIDN (administrator of the .nl domain) shows that nearly 90% of Dutch business websites do not have proper security in order. These websites do not have SSL encryption (recognizable by the 'lock' icon in the address bar and https:// before the URL), which means that visitors are at risk of security. Their privacy-sensitive data is not properly protected on these websites.
MKB Servicedesk and SIDN have analyzed the nearly 780.000 business .nl websites (excluding webshops). Of these, nearly 429.000 business websites process sensitive data, and of those, slightly more than 367.000 websites did not use any form of SSL encryption.
The importance of an SSL certificate
As a webshop or website owner, you are required to secure personal data in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act. This can be done using an SSL certificate. This certificate ensures that confidential information is transmitted encrypted, so your visitors do not have to worry about their privacy-sensitive data. This builds trust and leads to better conversion. The importance of an SSL certificate is therefore large.
You can well imagine that an increasing number of entrepreneurs who do not have SSL encryption will lose revenue as a result. Fortunately, Dutch website visitors are becoming increasingly aware of the potential dangers on the internet and will no longer consider a website without an SSL certificate to be trustworthy. Google also 'punishes' websites without SSL encryption by giving them a lower position in the search engine results. Since January 1, 2017, Chrome and Firefox have been warning users if the connection is 'unsafe', which causes almost all users to leave the site.
